Are the Christmas Island crabs edible?

Why aren't they harvested for food? Are they protected?

1. I see no reason why they cannot be eaten. They are not poisonous and presumable raditaion levels on the island are not such that it would be dangerous to consume them. The type of crab they are means they would have little meat and it would be a hassle to eat but presumably the meat, and the shell, could be ground and used towards fishpaste. The numbers of crabs mean there has never been a need to prtoect them but there is growing alarm at the fact that crazy ants accidentally imported from Africa are cuasing devastation to the crab population.
