Why is Christmas Island called Christmas Island if most everyone is Buddhist?

Christmas is a Christian holiday so how did the island get its name when its primarily a Buddhist island?

1. It was discovered on Christmas Day.... seriously.
2. same reason easter island is called easter island
3. same reason Greenland is called Greenland though it is all snow and ice.
4. Did you know that you can crack a meditating Buddhist up every time by whispering, "you can call me anything, but don't call me late for dinner?" Well, if you can make a Buddhist laugh with that old ditty, then what makes you think he'd be conscious enough to know what his island is called?
5. The island was named by Captain William Mynorsecof the ship Royal Mary which first discovered the island on December 25th 1643.
